Sofar x Lightspace - 27.05.22

A few weeks ago, we hosted our very own Sofar Sounds show - and boy was it special. For those of you who haven’t heard of Sofar yet, we better fill you in hadn’t we!

Sofar Sounds began as a small community of music lovers, putting on small gigs in friends living rooms. This amazingly grew into a global platform, appearing in over 400 cities across the world - including one of the best cities around, Leeds. Their aim was to take away all the annoying faff you sometimes get at gig. You know, the loud heckles from sweaty strangers, and all those sticky beer showers we’ve all experienced one too many times… Nobody wants that! What’s great about each show is that the line up and venue are kept top secret until the day before, which meant we had so many completely new faces come visit!

The line up was curated by Izzy who runs Girls Can Play Guitar. She is a massive champion of giving a voice to women in music, which meant the stage was graced by some of the cities most exciting and upcoming female performers. What a treat.

First up was R+B, jazz influenced duo Kim & Hyo. Their set consisted of not only beautiful vocals and incredible guitar playing, Kim was tap dancing too! It was the perfect blend of everything we didn’t know we needed.

The connection between the two of them was so great to watch, and we all came away booking our first tap dancing class..

Who needs a drummer when you can do it all yourself hey?

Have listen to their new track Breathe here!

Next up, Mica Sefia

What. A. Voice.

Usually performing with an 11 piece band, Mica gave us a stripped back set with her guitarist Cameron - wow, we had goosebumps every time she opened her mouth! She so amazingly combined the art of spoken word with her soulful, emotive vocals. She had the audience were hanging off every single one of her lyrics.

What a perfect reminder of exactly what Sofar is all about.

To end the evening we had the mesmerizing Yasmina, aka The Sunkissed Child

She is an artist originally from Lebanon, sharing little pieces of her life and her story through each song in the set. We were transported to so many places, listening to her so seamlessly play with languages, musical influences and genres. The stage was full of incredible musicians too, who clearly had such respect for the music they were playing. It was a true masterclass in storytelling.

Absolutely captivating…

The whole night made us do a big fat smile, it was great to have more live music through the doors!

Big ole thanks to Sofar Leeds for inviting us to be a part of the night - you’re welcome back anytime.

If you’re thinking ‘oh wow what a cool space for a gig’, you’re absolutely right….
